Global Switch submits major projects application for new Sydney data centre

Release date: 29.03.2010

Global Switch, the leading data centre provider in Asia-Pacific, has submitted a Part 3A Major Projects Application to the NSW Department of Planning for a new $200 million data centre development in Sydney.

The new data centre will be adjacent to Global Switch's existing data centre in Sydney which is already the largest data centre of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

Designed to meet the high Global Switch specification by DEM Architects & Associates and Aurecon Group, the 34,000 sq m building will make an important addition to the Sydney skyline and will also have best-in-class environmental credentials. It will be the first data centre in Asia-Pacific to target a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum rating which measures a building's environmental efficiency.

Development of the new centre - Sydney 2 - has been driven by the success of Global Switch's existing 42,000-sq m centre at Harris Street in Ultimo which is now operating at near full capacity. Construction of Sydney 2 is planned to commence shortly after full planning consent is achieved and will create up to 500 construction jobs.

Commenting on the new development, Global Switch Executive Chairman, John Corcoran, said: "The demand for data housing is growing at a substantial rate - as demonstrated by the success of our existing Sydney data centre.

"Data centres play a crucial role in supporting the operation of both business and government and we believe Sydney 2 will be a vital resource for customers needing to outsource their IT infrastructure to a data centre which offers the highest levels of capacity, reliability, security and operational support."

Global Switch currently operates 8 centres across Asia-Pacific and Europe which total more than 260,000 sq m of space and are occupied by internationally-renowned corporate tenants drawn primarily from the financial services, telecoms and data services sectors.

Global Switch is a Reuben Brothers company.
