Global Switch Sydney East joins an exclusive number of Australian data centres in becoming LEED Gold Certified

Release date: 07.07.2015

Global Switch, the leading owner and operator of large scale, multi tenanted carrier neutral data centres in Europe and Asia Pacific, has announced that the first stage of its $300 million Sydney East data centre has received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold rating. The world class facility is amongst a small number of data centres in Australia to be awarded a LEED certification.

LEED is an internationally recognised green building rating system developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) to help building owners and operators be environmentally responsible and use resources efficiently. The LEED rating tool is designed to assist owners and operators with aspects such as energy savings, water use, selection of green materials and choice of resources, and the quality levels of indoor environments.

Global Switch Sydney East, a Tier III+ world class data centre located on the edge of Sydney's Central Business District (CBD), received the certification by incorporating some of the latest environmental design features including:

  • Reconfigurable power and cooling distribution, variable speed fans, free air cooling systems and low energy CRAH units provide energy reductions of around 40% compared to traditional data centres.
  • The ability to harvest rainwater and to recycle water.
  • Installation of a green roof providing thermal protection and at the same time reducing solar glare.
  • Utilising where possible recycled or sustainable materials or components that assisted with accomplishing overall building efficiency.

The Sydney East data centre's LEED Gold certification is further evidence of Global Switch's ongoing commitment to reducing its impact on the environment through energy efficiency, reduction in carbon emissions and the provision of green energy solutions to customers. The achievement follows the recent certification of all of Global Switch's data centres across Europe and Asia-Pacific to ISO 14001:2004, the award of a BREEAM-NL Rating of Very Good for the first stage of a planned expansion to its Amsterdam data centre and membership of the Climate Change Agreement (CCA) scheme in the United Kingdom.

Damon Reid, Global Switch's Managing Director in Sydney said "Earning this important certification for the first stage of Sydney East is testament of the high quality environmental design we have applied to all aspects of the data centre from initial concept through to build and operation.  This world class design coupled with our location close to the CBD, unique for a data centre of Global Switch's scale, has generated considerable interest from new and existing customers, including financial institutions, enterprises, cloud providers, ISPs and system integrators, seeking network dense low latency solutions."

The first stage of Sydney East is now nearing full occupancy, and early works have already commenced on the second stage of the data centre.  In order to maximise efficiencies, the same leading environmental design concepts and construction standards of the first stage will be applied to the second stage.

Global Switch is a Reuben Brothers company.
